This is the same machine as the Ascaso Steel Uno Professional except that it has a smaller brass boiler (~225cc) and a 57mm portafilter grouphead and handle. This machine's three way solenoid valve only acts to relieve the pressure in the grouphead immediately after the extraction is complete. However, by design, it will not dry the extracted puck as well as the Professional version of this machine. On the flip side, this machines does a much better job with E.S.E. espresso coffee pods when compared to the professional version.
Please note that when comparison shopping, please make sure that the Ascaso Steel Uno Special Edition Versatile has a three way solenoid valve. There are some instances where some machines brought in the USA did not have this three way solenoid valve and sold at a slightly cheaper price.
There is approximately 30-60 second wait time to go from coffee mode to steam mode (after depressing the steam switch in). After steaming milk, the user can depress the steam switch out. After placing a cup under the steam wand, the user can rotate the steam knob to the 'on' position, and the pump will automatically activate so that the 'too hot steamed water' exits and the temperature of the boiler can be brought down to make additional espresso. This also needs to be done so the heating element does not burn out.
This steam knob feature in coffee mode makes it very practical for preparing Cafe Americanos.

Edit 9/26/13 : A year later the machine has badly aged so much for the high quality. The LED indicating power on has long stopped working and the lettering around the buttons worn off - they were printed on fake metal rings made of paper. On the plus side with the optional non pressurized filter and an optional screen (more $$) and a fine enough grind I regularly get good espresso.Do verify that this review is for the machine you're looking at.Original reviewI've had this machine for a few weeks now. The Ascaso uno SE has the looks and the feel of a high quality, more expensive machine and I think it offers very good value for the money. However to brew great coffee with it is a fussy proposition for a couple of reasons:A - the temperature needs looking after or the espresso will be cold. The first cup in the morning is a throw away - I just run it once without coffee and even then I always heat it a little more ( a few seconds) manually before every cup.andB - Although it's supposed to have a pressurized portafilter it still requires the finest grind - almost Turkish - and heavy tamping or the water runs right through it. Forgiving it's not.I'm ordering a non pressurized portafilter and also high quality grinder to go with it. I'm happy with it because I like the ritual tinkering and the result is worth it ... but that's just me. I'd definitely recommend it to some friends but not to people who'd prefer a semi-automatic machine.
